Hours later, Blake was only half asleep when he felt Reese shudder then tense in his arms. He made desperate sounds of fear and pain. His cries were guttural and alien to Blake like Reese's true voice was trapped in his chest along with his breath.

"Breathe," Blake begged him while Reese struggled and fought him. His hands clawed and beat at Blake as he held him and said his name, trying to call him back to reality.

Reese wore a faraway, glassy look in his eyes. He seemed too far to reach, and Blake squeezed him tighter to bring him back. Reese felt tense as steel in his arms, but also breakable. Still, Blake would rather crush him in his embrace than lose him.

When he felt Reese start to relax and breathe normally, Blake loosened his hold on him. He looked at him and saw him smile.

"Are you OK?" he asked, surprised.

"It's all good as long as you're here," Reese told him.

This time he didn't just seem tranquil as he gazed at Blake like after the last nightmare. There was a light in his eyes. Blake leaned down and kissed him gently. He gave Reese small kisses until he felt him start to fall asleep.

At first, Blake was afraid to take a breath or move until he was sure Reese was sound asleep. Such a terrible nightmare, and he was sleeping so peacefully now. His strength made Blake want to laugh and cry. Reese shouldn't have to be so strong, but he was. In the face of everything he had to live through, he had ten times the courage Blake did.

Not his father beating him, or anything that had happened to him since then, had put out the fire inside him that Blake had seen when he first met him. It had scared Blake then, but now it amazed him and made him love Reese even more. From now on, he wanted Reese to know only love. He wanted to shield and protect him.
